Free printable word lists for early readers

Short word lists you can print on one page or as flashcards, in the order most phonics programs teach them: CVC words, word families, digraphs and blends, then the Dolch sight words.

It is a small library on purpose. Every word was picked by hand for a young reader, and every list is checked automatically against its own rule (a CVC page only has consonant-vowel-consonant words with that vowel, a word family page only has words with that ending), and the Dolch pages match the original public-domain lists word for word.

CVC words by short vowel

Three-letter words a child can sound out letter by letter, one page per short vowel, grouped by word family.

Word families

Words that share an ending (cat, hat, flat), from the easiest starter words to blends and longer words.

Digraphs

Two letters that make one sound: sh, ch, th and wh, at the start and at the end of words.

Beginning blends

Two consonants at the start of a word where you hear both sounds, followed by a short vowel.

Dolch sight words

The complete public-domain Dolch lists: the service words in five levels and the noun list.
